What We Do
The Family Effect works to reduce addiction as a leading cause of family collapse and harm to children.
Why is this mission important? We know that 1 in 4 children live in a home where alcohol is abused; and 1 in 8 children live in a home where other drugs are abused. Children who have been exposed to substance use often have trauma-related behavioral concerns and developmental delays. Without intervention, these children often perform poorly in mainstream school, enter the juvenile justice system or other institutional care, and are more likely to begin substance use at a young age.
But there is hope. With early identification and treatment, we can help these children “catch up” to other children their age. But our services extend beyond the children who are negatively impacted by substance use. Evidence-based services are available for the whole family. This family centered care is crucial to sustaining positive long-term outcomes for all of us.

Programs We Support
Greenville is home to some extraordinary, evidence-based programs that reduce addiction’s impact in the family home. The Family Effect supports these programs by raising money, recruiting volunteers and increasing awareness of programs available at the Phoenix Center.
Serenity Place is a residential treatment center for pregnant women and women with children under the age of six. What makes Serenity Place so special is that children reside with their mother while she is in treatment.
Adult Outpatient includes individual, family, and group counseling for up to 9 hours per week while remaining in their home or community of choice. This allows them to maintain employment, take care of their children, and manage other responsibilities.
Prevention services are provided in multiple settings to a wide range of participants. Services are provided with three main objectives: prevent substance use, delay onset of use, and reduce amount of use.
Adolescent Outpatient includes individual, family, and group counseling for up to 9 hours per week while remaining in their community of choice. The Child and Adolescent team collaborates with other service providers to ensure wrap around care including school success.
Residential services for men and women include medication to reduce withdrawal symptoms.
